- what is absurd: see below
- Comments:
- You look, you think, you feel, you act, there is nothing that hinders you from that, but still, you fear. You say nothing and suffer, and it seems authentic, you say something, you cry out, and you feel like a pathetic clown. Existence ... will it ever end and change into something else? Or will it always be the same? I hope in God and it is good as long as I keep it quiet, but when I tell it to those that are religious they often too soon try to destroy me my peace. Sin, Sin, Sin they cry into my ears, and the fear I feel I fear because of them, I fear accusation without getting heard, I fear injustice, I fear terror of the soul. This is estrangening, this is grazing. This is scary. This is weird. It will not be there anymore tomorrow, when I have slept. Next morning I will be different again.
Is fear the core of life? I sometimes think so. Fear is unbearable, but only when you fear you are close to life that is otherwise always just construct and habit and having gotten used to. Fear removes all habits and puts you out of your comfort, it places you in the world that is not you. Naked, without shell you stand there in a world that is cold, that is icy, in the storm you stand and the ice crystals fall on you. I stop writing now, I can't bear facing and being this totality ...
To any human out there, Good luck!

- This seems to be a good site. I am doing research on existentialism for a paper. I tried to post a question on the forum, and it would not let me because my email address is apparently with a server that the creators of the site do not like. That is not fair. I am getting free email by using this server and I won't switch to something I'd have to pay for. I won't mention the name of it b/c this message might be banned too. That is my only complaint.

- It only seems to only become more confusing and complex with age. What to do now? There are ways out, but then nothing will be accomplished. Sure I could roll onto my back and enjoy it one more time, or many more times. But then i will have nothing left to turn to. Maybe this time it will feel more real. I know it did for them last time. I might have nothing to worry about though, today it seems that everything will be, alright. Only the passage of time will inform me for sure. One day I'll put on that other moving apparatus and then ill be on my way. Right to where i want to be. I hope that it is sooner than later. There isn't much more that i can do. It's all gone by now.

- What we are all about Starbucks purchases and roasts high-quality whole bean coffees and sells them along with fresh, rich-brewed, Italian style espresso beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, and coffee-related accessories and equipment
primarily through its company-operated retail stores. In addition to sales through its company-operated retail stores, Starbucks sells primarily whole bean coffees through a specialty sales group, a direct response business, supermarkets, and online at Starbucks.com. Additionally, Starbucks produces and sells bottled Frappuccino® coffee drink and a line of premium ice creams through its joint venture partnerships and offers a line of innovative premium teas produced by its wholly owned subsidiary, Tazo Tea Company. The Company's objective is to establish Starbucks as the most recognized and respected brand in the world.
To achieve this goal, the Company plans to continue to rapidly expand its retail operations, grow its specialty sales and other operations, and selectively pursue opportunities to leverage the Starbucks brand through the introduction of new products and the development of new distribution channels.

- What is absurd? What is that does not fit? It is absurd to believe in a thing that does not exist
god, heaven, hell. Life is not absurd, but because there is no one that created everyone, some people think that because it is like that, what is the point of living? The point of livin is making ine decisions and being responsible about them and the way Sartre discusses human beings in his BEING AND NOTHINGNESS. I mean, to be an existentialist is not an easy thing. We all have our supersitions. It is the effect of our culture. But to break away from these fallacious thinking, thereby, only, do we recognize our true and authentic capacity to live a better life.
I want to close with a quote from Fyodor Dostoyevsky, I have not yet achieved to learn the meaning of this phrase:
"Imagine that you are creating the fabric of human destiny, with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last. But that it was essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creature and to found that edifice on its unavenged tears. Would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me, and tell the truth.

- Comments:
- To: Vandy Van Zyl [monday october 7th 2002 at 01: 56]
To ask what is the universe or what is God is to
contradick the meaning of existence. We"live" despite
knowing just what life really is. Consciouly, "life" is a defacto state of being by which we accept the requesits of existence. All living things, by definition, must struggle
to survive. But man has willfully elevated his reasons
for being. We choose life or death depending on our values. To say "life doen't matter" puts one on a par with animals.
Only through presistent struggle has man dignified his
residence and made his term of life more compatible with his dreams....W224

The German artist Bernd Lehmann creates
Original etchings featuring Rainer Maria Rilke's rose themes
With his notion that all beauty is reflected in plants and flowers, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke saw these as a continual form of love and yearning. The North German artist Bernd Lehmann seeks to do justice to this particular perception. His beautiful and very charming edition "Dir zur Feier" dedicated to the poet comprises 15 original etchings centering on one theme: the rose. It is the most popular flower of all, appearing the most frequently in words and pictures too. Although every etching by Bernd Lehmann is complete in itself, each image builds up on the others in the series.
At the same time his etchings are an encrypted biographical portrayal of the poet for whom the rose played a significant role. In his rose motifs Bernd Lehmann also evokes the clichéd impression of Rilke which culminated in what surely belongs to the realm of legends: the story of how it was a rose that fatally injured him. For his gravestone he requested an epitaph containing several of the keywords found in his works, which Bernd Lehmann has also incorporated into his pictorial appraisal (cf. the last in his series of etchings "Niemandes Schlaf" (No-One's Sleep): "Rose, oh pure contradiction, desiring to be no-one's sleep under so many eyelids."
In his own way Bernd Lehmann helps Rilke's works come into 'blossom' and arouses in the perceiver a poetic yearning. His artistic interpretation suggests that everything that happens is in itself another beginning. Just as the poet does with his verse, Lehmann wishes his pictures to help us understand that change, life's method of transformation, is the only fixed form that exists.
Bernd Lehmann aims to provide an art accessible to everyone – an art that captures the beauty of the moment. Virtually every flower, every object is to him a receptacle in which he discovers something human and into which he instils something human. To him true happiness lies in developing an interest in every detail of life. (Rilke himself even considered it to be 'religion' to accept every single element as a part of the 'overall scheme of things'.)
Lehmann, who occasionally transforms Rilke's roses into a fragrant ornament, adheres to nature and its simplicity, which can unexpectedly turn into something infinitely great.
Born in 1950, Bernd Lehmann aroused the awareness of those interested in literature when at the Frankfurt Book Fair he presented his Chamisso Edition, soon to be published with a commentary by Dr Alexandra Hildebrandt in "Athenäum. Jahrbuch für Romantik" (2003). A miniature book containing his Chamisso etchings is in the pipeline and is scheduled to be published at the end of 2003.

Ok, so I stop talking and begin to act. I act by writing on this site. Because I exist and am able to write, and I chose to write something here, I get a reaction from you. You get upset. My existence has affected another human being on this planet. Is it your view to go further? To act in a manner in which I affect many individuals? Is there a goal to existentialism? What are you doing????

- Comments:
- your statement doesn't define the essence of existentialis jg
Maybe it doesn't. According to the Encarta encyclopedia...Because of the diversity of positions associated with existentialism, the term is impossible to define precisely.
As to Jesus's remarks to Pontius Pilate, "I am that I am", we can no longer be sure that he made such a remark. If all the disciples fled after his arrest, then the only people in the square that morning (according to Albert Schweitzer) were Romans and Jews sympathetic to the Roman cause. None of the Gospel writers were present, there were no tape recorders, no TV videos. So we can't say that Jesus said thus, or Pilate made the infamous quote "What is truth?". It may very well be a fictionalized version of events written by one of the gospel writers, decades after the death of Jesus.
But I know that I exist.

- what is absurd: how human behavior so closely can imitate the gadfly
- Comments:
- david, are you jumping into the smoldering caldron? I hope you except the risks envolved. (e.g.:gadflies)
It is my assumption that people create themselves through the choices they make. Jesus said to Pontius Pilot, when asked who he was: "I am that I am". Sartre has said, "people are condemned to be free." Both were existentialist?
I say we live between life and nothing. Continued angst is the result unless we delude ourselves in mythology.....jg
David is the main factor in existentialism a priori-the qualiy or fact of being or aposteriori - reasoning based on obversation and experience.
your statement doesn't define the essence of existentialis.

- what is absurd: the doctrine of the trinity
- Comments:
- I consider myself to be an American existentialist. I exist as a human who has the capacity to hold many different belief systems. If I was brought up in a Muslim country I would probably be Muslim, if I grew up in Spain in the 13th century, I would probably think that the world was flat. I exist, I can chose what I believe.
But if I lived during the inquisition, I would have been killed. If I lived under Stalin, I would have been imprisoned, If I lived in Iraq, I would have been tortured. But I live in America, and I am free to exist!
