Well, start by looking at the events of the time, and then try to extrapolate them into abstract ideas.
The War on Terrorism. The attempt to globalize the economy. Environmentalism. The attack on American Catholicism.
These all represent opposing campaigns against insitutions. The fact that there is terrorism against America and its modern, civilized, democratic, capitaliztic allies suggests a tension between Institutions and those who beleive the Institution is flawed or malfunctioning. Some people exploit natural resources, advance technologies, attempt to get all peoples in all lands. . . and some others dislike them for it, fight against it, see it as evil. Environmentalism --people within a society's boundaries fight against an influence in their own country: the use of natural resources to serve industry, capital, population growth. Global economy --the attempt to make all natuions on all continents into a homogeneous system. . . and the people who fight against it.
The thing is that all these fights resemble the thing they are fighting against. The Capitalists or whoever you want to call them pass regulations, lobby through the public media and execute programs, fight wars, and the peope lthat disagree with them try to implement programs, fight wars and work in the media.
Then there's the third group who are apathetic, who drop out, who ignore it and despise the whole shooting match.
This to me suggests that what is going on in the world is a tension between the system we have been living in for milleniam, and those who beleive it is time for another. Problem is, those who bleeive it is time for something new don;t know exactly what it is about the "old" that they dislike, and they don't know ehre to go.
It all seems to be a sleepy stagnation because in a way it is. As a species we are gestating, cogitating, processing what we know and trying to figure out what to do next. It amounts to a bunch of milling around. Consider the cliche: "I have a bad feeling about this. Its quiet. Too quiet. . ." When in times of quiet, its time to et ready for something big. Watch for it.
