Begs the question, "Why say anything at all?"

If you don't have time to explain why you think it was a stupid question, and only had time to tell us that it WAS a stupid question, it leds me to the questions, "What purpose does telling someone that their question is stupid serve? What does Joe get out of discounting, and then cutting and running except to turn around and discount/insult along the way as he recedes?"
