I agree that nihilism cannot be equated with religion per se. The celebration of hope and positivity that you mention supports my point precisely because the hope and positivity lie not with the human, but with that which is above the human in all respects. The hope and positivity that is refelcted in religion illuminates its disempowering effects. Believers make themselves feel better but they receive or see hope as emanating from a source outside of themselves. This is, by all means, the problem.
