: some of the pessimist philosophers (nietzsche, goethe, schopenhauer) see suicide - or knowing that at any time, one can escape the suffering of life - as the greatest comfort in life. i believe it was goethe who kept a dagger by his bed because he claimed that knowing he could escape life at any time helped him sleep well.
